Zen of Thieves
Zen of Thieves is a band performing the original songs of Wisconsin singer-songwriter Doc Heide.
A Kerrville New Folk finalist, Doc grew up in small towns on the Wisconsin River. As a child he developed an interest in mind, spirituality, and the nature of the good life.
This led him to pursue three simultaneous professional careers (music, theater, and clinical psychology). In each, he has explored questions of meaning and purpose.
His songs, in the literate tradition of Paul Simon/Leonard Cohen/Joni Mitchell, feature memorable melodies and create a contemplative and moving palate of sound.
In 2026 Doc will be inducted as a Fellow of the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts, and Letters.

Project details
Birthplace of the Thunder (released January, 2026) is an album of original songs that explore human possibilities.
Optimism in dark times (The Lantern ), compassion (Welcome, Pilgrim), and freeing oneself from the world's expectations (The World As I Found It) are addressed. Several songs (e.g., Pure-Heart Guitar, Fisher Goes to the Skyworld) were inspired by Doc's close friend Fred Alley, who died at age 38 right after winning the Richard Rodgers Award for Best New American Musical (The Spitfire Grill).
Other songs examine spiritual dimensions of being (e.g., All Shall Be Well about the British mystic Julian of Norwich). Some are very personal (e.g., Joanne, about Doc's parents). Others are philosophical (Nothing But a Song). /lyrics-song-descriptions
The musical style has been described as “transcendental chamber folk”, seamlessly integrating acoustic guitar, cello, piano, bass, French horn, and more.
Lead vocalists include Steve Koehler (Milwaukee Rep's Guys on Ice and Come from Away), Kerrville New Folk Finalist Karen Mal, Amy Chaffee (vocal coach to Channing Tatum, Scarlett Johansson, Kathy Bates, etc.), and others.
Instrumentalists include NARAS award-winner Eric Lewis (featured on the movie soundtrack Song Sung Blue), cellist/bassist Hans Christian (Robbie Robertson Band, Billy Idol) and drummer Paul Taylor (both Grammy nominees), and Rory Hoffman (sideman to Ricky Skaggs, Kathy Mattea, etc.).
